North Beach Residence
PROGRAM: 1200 SF New Construction
SITE: Mid-Block Urban
STATUS: Complete 2010
CONTEXT: IwamotoScott Architecture
PS House replaces an existing non-conforming 1906 Earthquake cottage in the middle of a block in the North Beach Neighborhood of San Francisco. The extraordinary compressive forces on this project dictated an unusually open response.
Dimensionally constrained to a 24’x24’x24’ cube, with a large area removed to accommodate a neighbor’s window, the spatial strategies were all focused on achieving the feeling or airiness that is evident in the final project.
Volumes are formally shifted to maximize cracks of light and space to appear within the small volume. A front wall of channel glazing and exterior materials that slip easily to the interior give the impression that the exterior space is part of the interior volume. Open Stairs, a cantilevered mezzanine, a three-story moment frame and opaque volumes relegated to the rear party wall of the house all work to create a feeling of a much larger home.
